Overlooking Huancayo and about 1.5 hours drive away is a 7km long snowy nevada, complete with glacier.
The closest you can get by road is up to 4,600m high and a 6km hike from the foot of the glacier.

The walk starts with a 200m descent to the first of the 3 glacial lakes and the first real view of the glacier itself

While the first lake was very pictureseque, it was nothing compared to the scene that greeted us 200m further up...

Then began the first really tiring part. The climb to the foot of the glacier only saw us gain another 400m in altitude,
but with some tough gradients and the high altitude it was a rather breathless experience at times.
The sense of achievement was, however, somewhat ruined by seeing a Peruvian shepherdess doing her knitting on the top of one of the peaks and finding that we'd been beaten to the top by a whole bunch of 8 year olds on a school trip!!

Still, make it I did! Perhaps one of the most exhausting experiences of my life
(especially the journey back and climbing up the last 200m), but highly rewarding!
