Paul bought his first car, a 1972 SAAB 96v4 in 'Savanna Beige' While it may be true that he spent plenty of time either underneath the bonnet or desperately avoiding traffic jams to prevent overheating, there was something special about driving it around. These Saabs are full of quirks, with column gear changing; a freewheeling mechanism (similar to riding a bicycle) and strangely pivoting windows and above all great fun to drive. They might not be the quickest car on the road (though can cruise at 70), but they drive well having made SAAB's name on the rallying scene during the 1960s. Indeed, Paul entered and drove his SAAB in the annual Oxford-Cambridge Varsity Rally and gained first place despite competing against new, faster and 'superior' machines. It was also just nice to be different - there aren't too many of them about anymore. It was quite a surprise, therefore, to stop at a petrol station while touring Norfolk in 2003 and find that another Saab 96v4 (even in that same 'lovely' colour) had pulled up behind.
Paul's car (the one at the front) was passed on to a friend in the summer of 2005, who has since chopped it in half and is towing the rear section behind his own recently restored 96v4. At some point, he would love to own another SAAB |
